Abundance of weed hosts as potential sources of onion and potato viruses in western New York
نویسندگان
چکیده
A season-long survey of common weeds was taken near onion and potato fields located within a large vegetable production region in western New York in 2008 and 2009. The objective was to determine the abundance of weed species known as hosts for Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV), a serious pathogen of onion, Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) and Potato virus Y (PVY), which are major pathogens of potato. Ninety-eight weed species were identified, 17 of which are known hosts for IYSV, PLRV and PVY. Common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, shepherd’s purse, horseweed and dandelion were among the most abundant species known as hosts for these viruses. This information could be useful for studying the role that these weed species have on the epidemiology of the major viruses in onion and potato production systems and for developing future virus management strategies. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Effect of living mulches and conventional methods of weed control on weed occurrence and nutrient uptake in potato
The aim of the study was to determine the biomass, abundance and species composition ofweeds, as well as macroelement uptake in potato weeded using mechanical, mechanical–chemical and mechanical control combined with the sowing of living mulches of white mustard, common vetch, Persian clover and tansy phacelia. Abundance and biomass of the weeds was themost effectively limited by the mechanical ...
متن کاملOverwintering locations and hosts for onion thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in the onion cropping ecosystem in New York.
Identifying locations where onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), overwinter and subsequently disperse is important for designing control strategies. In upstate New York from 2003 through 2006, potential overwintering sites in the commercial onion, Allium cepa L., cropping system were investigated early in the spring before onion seedling emergence and again late in th...

Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) has been found consistently in commercial dry bulb onion fields throughout New York State since 2006. Yearly recurrence of IYSV may result from annual reintroductions of the virus or persistence of the virus in overwinte...

In order to evaluate the impact of crop residues (zero, 25 and 50%) and nitrogen (zero, 125 and 250 kg ha) on weed seed bank and potato yield, two-years research was conducted as a split plot arranged in randomized complete block design in Rozveh Agriculture Research Station, Freidan-Esfahan. Numbers of weed species in seed bank, aboveground, and both seed bank and aboveground were 1, 2 and...
